Disruption in the mail delivery services operated by Itella has intensified further, prompting the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority-FICORA to monitor the activities of the mail and logistic service operator.

According to a Finnish language newspaper, Turun Sanomat, several thousand mails and parcels had remained undelivered in Uusimaa and Turku areas alone for the last few days.

FICORA will scrutinise the mail delivery process of the last five days to assess timely delivery.

FICORA has also decided to check the delivery process on a quarterly basis, when the normal inspection interval is half a year.

Itella sources said the reasons behind the delays are reduced manpower and co-determination negotiations forcing the delivery personnel to learn new routes.

The authorities, however, claimed the situation has already improved. Almost all letters will be delivered within the limits required by the law.

According to the law, mail delivery should not be delayed by more than five days, if there is no strike or bad weather conditions.

Earlier, in April 25, the Itella authorities said the disruption in mail delivery services created after the Easter holiday affected more than 10,000 households a day.

The authorities said learning new distribution routes introduced after Easter took some time.

Itella decided in March to reduce its workforce by nearly 500 after a co-determination talk.

The co-determination talk was initiated on an Itella assessment of decline in demand for mail delivery services, among other reasons.

The majority of the laid-off workers will be out of work in May.
