The Vihreä Liitto (Green League) will continue with its current leadership structure which provides for only one party leader.

The party on Saturday during its annual congress meeting in Jämsä voted on the two-chair model used by many green parties in Europe.

The green parties in Germany and Sweden use the two-chair model. In the country, the model is also used by the green party’s Federation of Green Youth and Students.

The proposal was downed as 188 delegates voted in favour of the status quo against 124 delegated who voted for the two-chair model.

Lasse Miettinen, the party secretary was in favour of the reform but his predecessor, Panu Laturi, cautioned against the model, warning that it could lead to disputes.

Maria Ohisalo, one of the co-chairs of the Federation of Green Youth and Students supported the reform. According to Ohisalo, the system has so far worked well for the party’s youth wing.

Long-serving Green League parliamentarian Osmo Soininvaara dismissed the idea. Soinivaara referred back to the contest between Jutta Urpilainen and Antti Rinne during the social democrats party leader election.

According to Soinivaare, if the social democrats had the two-chair model system, they would have both Urpilainen and Rinne as the party heads.

The chair of the Green League Ville, Niinistö, admitted that he should sum up the message better and present the issues pertinent to the party in the government.
