The Southwest Finland ELY Centre suspects the recent nickel leakage as the reason behind the deaths of a number of fishes in the Kokemäki River.

The environmental authority has dismissed lack of oxygen as the reason behind the deaths, as measurements taken by the ELY Centre confirmed normal oxygen level in the river.

Hundreds of dead tenches have been discovered in the Kokemäki.

Tenches through their gills are particularly sensitive to emissions and interference in their ion metabolism, said Kari Ranta-aho, head of fishery at the ELY Centre.

It is, however, difficult to investigate the cause of the deaths because the examination would require blood samples from living trenches.

Ranta-aho could not verify whether the frequency of deaths has yet reached the peak since the nickel emission.
