The Eastern Uusimaa police have launched an investigation into suspected abuse of the disabled by nurses at a housing unit in Sipoo.

The police said the media first raised the suspicion that the disabled in the unit were being mistreated and even abused.

The suspicion prompted the police to launch a preliminary investigation. The case is being treated as aggravated assault.

The unit under investigation is the Kårkulla Samkommun joint municipality-maintained Sagaboende.

YLE on Thursday reported that the municipality of Sipoo received complaints about maltreatment of the disabled.

Leena Kokko, director of Sipoo’s social and health services, confirmed that the municipality in June received complaints about maltreatment of residents at the unit.

Following the complaints, officials from the municipality made a surprise visit to the unit and met with those in charge. During the visit it was observed that the unit operated differently from their own unit in Sipoo.

The inquiry into the unit management is still going on but Kokko did not confide the exact nature of the complaints. Kokko, however, said the complaints were related to practice and not to abuse or physical violence.
