Fri, 12 Dec, 2014 12:03:29 AM FTimes-STT Report, Dec 12 Leaders of the the components of four-party alliance government. File Photo Lehtikuva. Almost one in every two Finns is disappointed with the Alexander Stubb-led alliance government, found a survey conducted by the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat. The popularity rating is the lowest when compared to the previous three governments in office. The government’s popularity plunged after the inauguration of Stubb as the country’s prime minister this summer. When Jyrki Katainen vacated the office of the prime minister, 9 per cent respondents were very disappointed with the government. Currently, that figure has increased to 13 per cent, which corresponds to the figures during the 1990’s recession. Two years ago, Katainen’s government received an approval rating of 38 per cent, while the current government approval rating stands at 16 per cent. Political analysts believe the government’s popularity rating is most affected by the economic situation. Despite the fact that the economy was already experiencing downturn during Katainen’s tenure, the consciousness of the Finns about the crisis was not actualised until just after the summer. “When the economy goes bad, we tend to look at who is leading the country. The largest party bears the biggest responsibility,” observed Mari K Niemi from the University of Turku Centre for Parliamentary Studies. More News
