Finnish troops on a training mission in Afghanistan on Saturday were attacked, bringing the total number of attacks on Finnish soldiers in Afghanistan this year to four.

According to the Finnish Defence Forces, neither the Finnish troops nor the Afghan officials present were injured in the attack which took place at around 4:00 p.m. in northern Afghanistan.

The Finnish troops were conducting a security and advisory training when shots were fired at them from around 800 metres.

Pekka Kortelainen, commander of the Finnish troops, said eight Finnish soldiers were riding inside two armoured vehicles when they were shot at. There were also about 15 Afghan officials in the convoy.

The Finnish troops alongside Afghan officials returned fire, before leaving the scene, about 600 kilometres south of Mazar-i Sharif.

The shoot-out lasted for about 20 minutes.

The Finnish troops returned to their base. According to Kortelainen, attacks carried out against Afghan soldiers occur on a daily basis.
