Repeated attempts have been made to defraud elderly people, at least in Pirkanmaa region, said the police.

The latest fraud attempt took place on Tuesday at Lempäälä in south of Tampere.

The fraudsters are carrying on with their activities, despite the arrest last week of a group of five suspects.

The objective of the suspects was to get money and valuables from old people. They often pretended convincingly over the phone to be a relative or a neighbour, among other things, in a dire need for financial assistance.

Immediately after the phone call, a person would appear on the door to collect the money on behalf of the caller.

In some cases, the fraudsters pretended to be police officers asking for bank cards and bank codes for investigative purposes.

According to the police, other suspects in the scam are roaming free. The number of such cases of fraud or attempted fraud has reached nearly 40.
