About 20 protesters gathered on Saturday in the Central Finland town of Keuruu to protest against logging, said the Finnish Nature League in a statement.
The environmentalists’ protest interrupted logging at an old forest in Keuruu, said the environmental protection organisation.
According to the organisation, Metsähallitus has continued with logging at rare old forests in the former garrison area, despite existence of trees there that could be as old as 150-220 years.
The logging stopped when the protesters approached the logging machines, prompting removal of them from the site.
Later in the day, Metsähallitus announced that it had negotiated with the protesters and came to the agreement that no further logging will take place this spring in the disputed Keuruu Rautovuori area without first discussing with the environmental organisation.
The planned logging, however, will continue outside the protected areas.
