FTimes – STT Report, Jan 18

Lowering labour taxes, bringing the tax rates under control and lowering the employment threshold are among the ways in which the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) would heal the Finnish economy.

The Kokoomus wants these robust measures in place right at the beginning of the electoral term, since it will support businesses and growth.

The chair of Kokoomus, Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, who on Saturday spoke at the party council meeting in Tampere, did not give the exact figure of how big the adjustment during the beginning of the electoral term has to be agreed.

This has to be seen on the basis of latest figures and forecasts in spring.

The Kokoomus policy clearly states that means should be found for more tax cuts rather than increases. However, what there is on the party’s cut list was not presented and more light on the issue is expected in the coming weeks.

The party also believes that the next government programme should be substantially shorter and more precise than the preceding one.

According to party leaders, the programme is to focus on what is relevant and, above all, it must be strategic.

Stubb criticised the six-party government coalition government programme which according to him resulted in endlessness strategies and a number of papers.

The Kokoomus promised on its part to present its own election programme focusing on what it says is essential.

Stubb pointed out that showing too much faith in consensus is a bad example in the six-party alliance government.

He said the triumph of consensus cannot be hailed, citing the pension reform negotiations which the Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff in Finland-Akava failed to consent to.

Still, the premier said he was not completely abandoning the principle of consensus, stating that consensus is not in principle a bad thing, but there must be some kind of accountability.
