The Finnish cities of Espoo, Lahti and Tampere have all made it to the finals of the Earth Hour City Challenge organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

According to WWF, the aim of the international contest is to mobilise action and support from cities in global transition towards a sustainable future powered by renewable energy.

A total of 163 cities from different parts of the world took part in this year’s contest. In the end, 44 finalists from 16 countries were selected.

Finland is the only country all the participants of which have reached the finals.

Espoo was selected because of its energy information service, Lahti for its rational use of land as well as investment in production of cleaner energy and Tampere was hailed for its energy-efficient construction and sustainable mobility.

The winner of the challenge will be announced in March.

Cities such as Gothenburg, Paris and Seattle are also in the final.
