Domestic violence between both married and cohabiting partners decreased significantly last year, reported the Finnish language daily Savon Sanomat.

In general, domestic violence has decreased by about 6 per cent in a year.

Criminal statistics, however, showed that violence directed towards children by parents in the country is still at a high level.

Still, it is much less common than violence between adults. A large proportion of crimes of violence in the families currently receive attention of the authorities.

The police have also received reports of increased violence against parents by children during the current decade resulting to launch of criminal investigations.

Such cases include situations where children who are already attained the age of adulthood forcefully extort money from their parents.
