20% come for work, 10% for study, 10% for asylum
FTimes Report, Oct 16

More than half of the foreign background people have moved to Finland for family reasons, said the Statistics Finland.

The Statistics Finland released a survey report on Thursday which also said that 20 per cent people of the foreign background came on employment purposes, 10 per cent came as students, while 10 per cent came as asylum seekers.

“People move to Finland from abroad for various reasons. One reason triumphs over all others: family and love,” said the report.

For women, family reasons were more common for moving to Finland than for men. For men, family reasons were also the most important ones, but reasons related to work and studies were emphasised as well.

These data are the first results from the survey on work and well-being among persons of foreign origin carried out by the Statistics Finland in cooperation with the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (TTL).

The survey was conducted based on interviews with 3,200 people of foreign background aged between 15 and 64 permanently living in Finland.

The interviews were conducted in 12 different languages in 2014 and 2015.

The survey was financed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, and the EU’s Integration Fund.
