The Finnish Border Guard and the Swedish police conducted a joint operation on September 29 which resulted in the arrest of 15 persons on suspicion of human trafficking.

The operation followed the Border Guard’s investigation into suspected cases of arranging illegal entry of people in the country. A criminal gang is suspected of trafficking possibly 100 individuals into the country this year.

The gang is suspected of organising the trafficking from Haparanda to Tornio, arranging passenger ferries at Helsinki and Turku ports as well flights at the Helsinki Airport.

The Finnish language tabloid Ilta-Sanomat which first broke the news said the criminal gang gained hundreds of thousands of euros through the trafficking activities.

A number of suspected cases of illegal trafficking of people in the country are currently being investigated.

The recent incident, however, is unusual, considering the number of persons involved and the activities of the gang, said Jukka Tekokoski from the Finnish Border Guard crime prevention unit.

Tekokoski said the case is possibly the biggest of its scale ever investigated in the country.

All the detained persons have Iraqi background and some of them are Finnish citizens. The pre-trial investigation continues in Finland. A request for extradition has been submitted for the suspects detained in Sweden.
