Photo – Lehtikuva. The police on Tuesday said they had carried out the single largest confiscation of amphetamine in the criminal history of the country.
The confiscation which involved 54 kilos of exceptionally strong amphetamine happened in Pirkanmaa town of Nokia in May 2015.
The quantity of the drug seized is equivalent to approximately 110 kilos of normal amphetamine. About 540,000 doses of use could have been derived from the haul.
The street value of the drug could have been just shy of three million euros.
The previous record of amphetamine confiscated in the country was a few kilos less than the haul confiscated by the Finnish Customs.
The previous record of amphetamine seizure in Pirkanmaa region totalled six kilos.
According to the police, a gang was responsible for trafficking amphetamine to Tampere region from the Netherlands.
The case has raised eyebrows since the amphetamine haul was trafficked directly to the Pirkanmaa region instead of the capital city region.
“Pirkanmaa is a vast area and certainly buyers can be found in Pirkanmaa. But, the quantity is so exceptionally huge that it is possible that it would have been sold in other parts of Finland,” said lead investigator Jari Räty from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
A total of 13 persons of whom nine are behind the bars are suspected in the case.
There is no a Finnish national among the suspects, but those who were responsible for taking care of receiving the drug consignment reside in Finland. Legal proceedings concerning all the suspects will take place in Finland, Räty said.
