The reception of refugees from refugee camps in Turkey is more reasonable than relocation of asylum seekers who entered Europe illegally from one EU member state to another, said Foreign Minister Timo Soini.

Soini, however, did not comment on the extent of Finland’s preparedness to raise its refugee quota as a result of relocation of refugees from Turkey.

Currently, Finland's annual refugee quota is set at 1,050 persons, while next year the quota is set to increase by 750 persons.

“For now will not go ahead of things,” Soini said during EU Foreign Ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.

Plans to relocate thousands of registered refugees from camps in Turkey have been mulled in the EU. According to official sources, the matter is not yet a topical issue since EU first has to enhance its external borders in order to control illegal influx of asylum seekers.

The relocation of refugees from outside the EU is viewed as a more sustainable solution compared to internal relocation of asylum seekers from Greece and Italy to other countries in the EU.

“It is much more reasonable to take people of refugee status whose cases have been examined and who are not victims of human trafficking than allowing human trafficking where people even suffocate in containers and drown in the Mediterranean,” Soini said.

The EU has agreed to relocate within member states 160,000 asylum seekers who arrived in Greece and Italy.

The aforementioned number of refugees outside the EU is even greater. So far, member states have agreed to take just 20,000 refugees based on the country-specific quotas.
