The government on Thursday decided to apply for 120 million euros in emergency funding from the European Union to offset the costs of providing for asylum seekers.

The application presented by the Finnish government concerns emergency funding for the costs incurred by the Finnish Immigration Service for taking care of asylum

seekers, which also includes the expenditures at the asylum seekers’ registration centre at Tornio.

The EU may support the expenditures incurred before the date of submission of the request for assistance.

In principle, the EU may grant emergency assistance for a maximum duration of 12 months.
