Finnish diplomatic missions around the world will not organise any Independence Day reception this year, reported the Swedish public service broadcaster SVT.

Independence Day receptions in all the missions have been cancelled due to saving measures.

Jarmo Viinanen, the ambassador of Finland to Sweden told SVT that embassies have had to cut costs for several years already.

“Yes, it is seen in the daily activities quite clearly,” Viinanen said.

The cancellation of Independence Day reception was also reported by the Helsingin Sanomat, a Finnish language daily.

The 2017 Independence Day celebrations, on the other hand, are expected to be held in an impressive way. Finland will mark the centenary of its independence in 2017.
