The electronic system is expected to streamline the processing of applications.
Time to be saved from processing the applications electronically cannot yet be estimated, said Juha Similä, Head of the Asylum Unit.
“It is hard to say, would it save days or weeks. It will last momentarily when the change on the processing duration can be seen,” Similä said.
Following the change, all information related to the asylum process will be availed to authorities around the country immediately.
At the same time, physical transfer of documents will stop since then new system allows the scanning of all documents submitted.
The new system will also benefit asylum seekers.
“The applicant gets the document back immediately. We will no longer need to store the documents until the end of the application process,” Similä added.
As many as 2,600 applications were lodged so far this year.
