The Federation of Finnish Midwives in a positional paper has recommended that intersexual children should determine their own gender.

The association supports the social and health care ethics committee’s recommendation that the child’s external sexual characteristics be changed only after the child chooses for himself or herself their defined gender and thus a child can determine own sexuality.

The association believes if the parents wish their children to have early aesthetic children, that parents should be informed that altering external sexual characteristics do not affect how a child later experiences their own sense of gender.

An intersexual person has sexual characteristics that are not clearly male or female. In Finland, about three to eight intersexual children are born each year.

The association pointed out that an intersexual child is healthy, and does not require medical intervention other than in immediate health-threatening situations.

The association believes the subject of intersexuality should be explained to all families who are already visiting maternity clinics. The children’s parents will also be provided, according to the association, psychosocial support from the moment of birth.
