Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and his British counterpart Theresa May on Wednesday held a telephone conversation about the United Kingdom’s withdrawal process and future relationship with the European Union.

The British Prime Minister called Sipilä in order to explain the United Kingdom’s plans and to hear Finland’s views, according to a press release of the Government Communications Department issued on Wednesday.

“Finland and the United Kingdom will continue to have a lot of shared interests in many different areas in the future. Finland’s aim is a balanced relationship between the EU and the UK that would secure the interests of both parties,” said Sipilä.

Negotiations on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal and future relationship with the European Union will only begin after the UK has submitted its formal withdrawal notification to the European Council.

May has announced that the notification will not be made before the end of the year.
