Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, also the chair of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coaltition Party-NCP) has reiterated the need for readiness in making a quick solution regarding the country's foreign and security policy.

According to the premier, prompt application for NATO membership cannot be ruled out during the next parliamentary term if the country's security calls for such a decision.

"The foreign and security tectonic plates are shifting at this moment, and this means that Finland's foreign and security policy must also be agile. In my opinion, every option must be kept open in the parliamentary term," said Stubb during an interview with news agency STT.

Stubb also believes it was erroneous to skip the application to join the military alliance during the previous parliamentary term pointing out the need to keep the foreign and security policy debate open.

Stubb stated that an application for NATO membership requires the backing of the nation and the whole political leadership.

NCP wants the next government to draft a NATO report designated to assess the benefits and drawbacks of the membership.
