Four people including a minor boy were killed in two separate road accidents at Suonenjoki in north Savo and Joensuu in north Karelia on Saturday.

In Suonenjoki, two people died in a head-on collision between two cars on Highway 9, the police said.

The accident took place when a car travelling toward Suonenjoki swerved into the oncoming traffic at high speed.

A four-year-old boy died in the car that swerved into the oncoming lane, the other was the driver of the second car.

A total of seven people were involved in the accident. The car that drifted into the opposite lane was also carrying two children of the driver. There were four people in the second car.

Five people were transported from the site of the crash to Kuopio’s central hospital. Some of them were seriously injured.

The accident scene is about half a kilometre from the Lyytilätie and Highway 9 junction in the direction of Suonenjoki.

The accident took place on a straight dry road with good visibility.

Meanwhile, in the other fierce accident, two young men were killed in Joensuu.

A passenger car rolled onto its roof into a ditch on Särkivaarantie at around 3.30pm, the police said.

The accident occurred near the municipal border of Joensuu and Kontiolahti.

According to the police, two men of 21 and 20 years from Joensuu died in the accident.

The car was coming from Ilomantsintie and flew into a ditch to the left. There were no other passengers in the car.

The on-duty fire chief said based on skid marks, the car was very clearly speeding.

The road near the accident site is bumpy, which could have resulted in the car swerving away from the road.
