The Helsinki District Court on Friday sentenced a motorist to four-and-a-half years’ imprisonment for the death of a cyclist at Töölö in Helsinki in August this year.

The court awarded the punishment to the convict as number of charges including aggravated man slaughter and assault brought against him were proved beyond doubt, court sources said.

The man was also found guilty of endangering the traffic.

The prosecutor had called for the man to be sentenced for killing of the cyclist but the court rejected the appeal as it sensed that the act was not intentional.

The Court said that the man was not certain at the time of the incident that the act would have resulted to death or could have led to a foreseeable consequence.

The prosecutor had called for the 1980-born to be handed a tougher sentence of over eight years.

According to witnesses, the motorist drove past the cyclist and applied emergency brake causing the cyclist to fly over the bicycle's handlebar.

Medical examinations showed the cyclist had suffered cerebral contusion and spinal injury as a result of the impact.

The Court pointed out that the motorist should have been aware that it was not possible for the cyclist to evade the car or apply brakes, but instead collide with the car and suffer serious injuries.

The incident happened in the middle of August at the intersection between Tukholmankatu and Mannerheimintie, throwing the cyclist into the street. The cyclist died the same day.

The motorist who was also charged with fleeing the scene of the accident was caught by the police the day after the collision.
