Students from the 6th to the 9th year of Rantavitikka school donated their day labor money, 2,212 euros in all, to a local refugee center.

The money will be used for women and childrens’ club activities. Toys and craft supplies will be acquired and a day trip to either a circus or HopLop is could be undertaken.

On the annual labor day, whcih was on Monday 28, September. youngsters do chores at home or work in a business of their own selection. Some of the students spent the labor day at home, cleaning, organizing and taking out the garbage. At day’s end, parents give them compensation for their efforts. The compensation they receive is then given to school which is, in turn, donated to to charities.

The charity target was different from official, usual charities of the school. “We have collected this money for you. We hope that you put it to good use and continue on the right path”, said head of the student council, Taika Springare, as she gave the money to refugee director Katja Junnila.

”The donation to the local refugee center was a pleasant surprise to me. It’s important to help those in distress who come to Finland”, Springare told Finnish Language daily the Lapin Kansa earlier.

It has been heartwarming to the students that the joy that the money brings can be closely felt and the help they have given feels more concrete.

In previous years, the money travelled to distant locations such as Africa.

The distance has made it difficult to observe the importance of donations and the difference that donations sometimes make.
