A 31-year-old man is suspected of a number of sexual offences, the Helsinki police said on Monday. All the victims are girls and the youngest one was six years old while the eldest was 17.

The police have identified 36 victims, but estimate that dozens of victims have remained unidentified.

“A large number are as yet unidentified,” says the investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Teija Koskemäki-Karaharju.

The man is suspected to have contacted girls through a number of a different websites, some of which were game sites aimed at children. The suspected events happened between 2007 and 2014.

Similar happenings are increasing all the time, according to the police, with younger and younger.

The Helsinki police receive cases of similar style and magnitude in bunches every year.

“I suspect that this shows a clear correlation to the fact that more and younger children have Internet access without supervision or proper guidance,” said Koskemäki-Karaharju.

“On the Internet, you can conceal your age and seem sincere, at least initially. Once contact is made, slowly, unexpected things start happening.”
