The government is planning to set up separate centres for those who have been denied asylum in Finland, Interior Minister Petteri Orpo said on Thursday.

These return centres would have tighter controls; for example, returnees will have to sign in regularly at the centre.

Despite the tight control, the return centres are not intended to be in prisons, Orpo said.

There will be one or more return centres established as necessity dictates, according to Orpo.

“We are looking into possible locations for the return centres now. I don’t know yet that one has been chosen,” Orpo told reporters.

Establishment of return centres is included in the government’s immigration policy papers expected to be announced on December 8.

Orpo said he hopes that the rejected asylum seekers will return to their own countries voluntarily, so that Finland will not have to resort to forced returns.
