A record number of women started military service this year. A total of 627 women took up voluntary military service, with 297 of them beginning the service in January and 330 in July, said the Defence Forces.
 
The number of women serving in the military has risen since 2006. Last year held the previous record for women conscripts with 543.
 
More women than ever before have also applied for military services. Altogether, there were a total of 842 female applicants, while last year the figure was just under 800.
 
According to the Finnish Defence Forces, about 7,000 women have trained for the reserves, and about 60 per cent of them have received leadership training. Defence Forces news outlet Ruotuväki first reported on the matter.
