Such incidents were reported to the rescue authorities, at least in Helsinki, Juankoski, Jyväskylä and Siikainen. Some alarms were, however, uncalled for, as the swans were swimming in free-flowing streams. The quick change of weather characterised by intensifying freezing conditions was cited as one of the reasons for the increased alarms made. Furthermore, according to the Helsinki Rescue Department, the fact that people were outdoors during the day, checking on the nature, led to the increased number of alarms. In Jyväskylä, the story of the swans which lived near Makkarajoentie ended on a sad note, when the swan mother was confirmed dead. The swan which was rescued in Siikainen was also taken to veterinary clinic. The bird which was transported to Pori could not fly, as its wings were frozen. The baby swan, which was born last summer, was taken to the rescue services, from where it was transferred to Heinola veterinary clinic. Food is not easily available to swans in icy conditions, according to chief fire fighter Pentti Partanen from the Central Finland Rescue Department.
