Dog owners including those living in enclosed areas have been advised not to let their dogs roam free so as to avoid the risk of being scared by the fireworks lit to celebrate the turn of New Year, said Etsijäkoiraliitto, an expert organisation which helps stray animals get back home.

Trained rescue dogs will help to search out the missing dogs. However, they will not be at work on New Year’s Eve.

The association has called on dog owners to place a collar leash or harness on the dogs.

Fireworks sale began on Saturday and lighting them can only start from 6:00 p.m. Lighting of fireworks is, however, banned in a number of urban areas.

According to the association, despite the ban, lighting of fireworks and the consequent escape of dogs usually start immediately at the zero hour.

The association has advised dog owners to pull curtains down and put the television or radio on in case the dog is scared.

Furthermore, fur sample taken from the lost dog can help to trace a lost dog by following the smell trail, advised the association.
