FTimes - STT Report, Dec. 28

Two persons were drowned in separate accidents in North Savonia and North Karelia on Saturday, police and rescue department sources said.

In Kiuruvesi, North Savonia, a man born in the 1950s died after being drowned in a frozen lake.

He had gone out with another man on a snowmobile to fish, when ice collapsed a mile from the land in Sulkavanjärvi. The snowmobile and the sleigh capsized and sank in the lake.

One of the two survived but the other died at the scene.

The Eastern Finland Police Department advised people to take caution while moving on frozen lakes since ice resistance still varies greatly.

Pekka Koistinen, a police inspector, said in order to be certain about safety, the public should wait until the ice gets thicker. He noted that the freezing condition has been there only for a short while.

In another incident, a 60 years old man who had gone to lower fishing nets was found dead on ice at Liperi in North Karelia.

The rescue services suspect the man died from an illness.

The man, a native of Joensuu, had left in the morning to lower fishing nets near Ruunaniemi.

The deceased’s relatives raised the alarm and contacted the emergency response centre when he had failed to come back or return their calls.

When the police and rescue services arrived, they followed the man’s tracks from the summer cottage. The man was found about 400 metres from the shore, where paramedics pronounced him dead.
