The indicators determining the level of vitality was assessed in eight municipalities.
The city centres of Tampere and Kokkola took the second and third spot in the vitality scale with Kouvola behind in last place.
The figures were obtained by taking into account the number of stores open on Saturday, less empty business premises as well as the relation to the population of inhabitants was considered during the survey.
"In relation to Saturday business, businesses only open during weekdays and empty premises in the cities can also be compared," said researcher Martti Wilhelms.
Wilhelms conducted Elävät Kaupunkikeskustatry research on the capacity of vitality in municipalities with the goal to obtain vitality figures of 50 cities.
According to Wilhelms, the cities which fared better are which have shopping centres located in the city centres.
This is the case with Hyvinkää which rose from a big shopping centre a few years ago.
"It has changed the centre, although we do not have a pedestrian street, the city centre is found in the series of squares which along came the city centres," said head of zoning Anne Jarva.
According to Jarva, for years the city centre has been the living room for city dwellers.
Wilhelms has encouraged cities to monitor vitality indicators. The alarming signs are when the number of Saturday stores decline and empty business premises increase.
