FTimes-STT Report, June 30

The uncertainty is, according to him, on everyone’s mind prior to this week’s referendum.

“It’s not even clear what the vote on Sunday is about,” Hilonen told STT over telephone.

The social curator could not predict the outcome of the referendum.

“The people are certainly divided on whether to continue in the EU and in the eurozone or not.”

Hilonen, who has been living in Greece for 18 years, pointed out that the everyday situation has not changed much from what it was yesterday or last Friday.

“The only effect I’ve seen is that people were waiting in line on Sunday at the ATMs.”

Many Greeks’ optimism has been put to the test, according to Halonen, in the midst of the prolonged economic crisis.

“This year in general has been tough for many. Those Greeks who do not have jobs--their savings are now gone, eaten away. The human plight has certainly deepened.

“Those with active employment do not have big problems, as long as their salaries are paid on time, and haven’t fallen terribly. Life is certainly not wonderful, but continues nonetheless.”
