A Finnish group of divers has discovered near the Ahvenanmaa islands a sunken ship believed to contain more than a million euros worth of copper.

According to the national broadcaster YLE, the Ahvenanmaa Board of Antiquities considers that the ship was the Kantava, a steamboat that sunk during an autumn storm in 1925.

There are 290 tonnes of copper in the shipwreck as well as the possibility of gold.

The wreck has not yet been touched. The diving group is trying to track down the owner of the ship and its sunken cargo.

“We do not own it, and we would like to give the coordinates to the owner, who can decide what to do with the ship and its cargo. It could be very valuable,” says diving group representative Mikko Simola.

One possible owner has already been informed, Simola told STT.

“We will meet on Monday and clarify the issue. [The possible owners] say they have indisputable proof.”

According to Simola, darkness has kept the secret of the wreckage in a safe place. The group dives as far as 90 metres.

The group also informed the Ahvenanmaa government of the discovery about a week ago.
