Timo Soini was re-elected the chair of Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) for another two-year term at the party congress in the coastal town of Turku on Saturday.

Soini, who has been at the helm of the party since 1997, was elected unopposed after his opponent Raimo Rautiola withdrew from the race.

The Finns Party’s 20th anniversary is currently underway in Turku.

Jussi Niinistö was also re-elected the first vice chair of the party. Niinistö defeated his rival Ilpo Haalisto with a clear majority of 584 votes to 46.

Niinistö was named the Defence Minister in the Prime Minister Juha Sipilä cabinet in May.

The 44-year-old Niinistö is a second term MP from the electoral district of Uusimaa.

He was elected the first vice chair of the party for the first time during the 2013 party congress.
