Around 4,000 people demonstrated peacefully against racism in the coastal city of Turku on Saturday.

The leader of the Vihreä liitto (Green League), Ville Niinistö and lawmaker Li Andersson, among others, spoke at the peaceful event titled “We have a dream” at the Turku Market Square.

“We wanted to oppose that atmosphere which may allow racism,” said Mikko Kuusto, one of the organisers of the demonstration.

Anna Mäkipää, who was also among the organisers of the demonstration, said the event was not aimed at any party or against any individual.

The Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) congress is also being held in the city over the weekend.

Kuusto and Mäkipää said they did not recognise Finns Party representatives at the market square.

“We have a dream” demonstration was initiated after a Finns Party MP Olli Immonen called for a fight against multiculturism in a message posted on the social media site Facebook.
