The police suspect the building in Riihimäki that caught fire on Friday night was set on fire intentionally. A man of about 40 has been detained by the police in suspicion of the arson.

The emergency response centre was alerted to the fire which broke out at around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The residents of the apartment building will be allowed back earliest at the start of next week.

“It will be assessed at the beginning of the week when [residents] will be allowed back,” said chief fire fighter Mika Kivipato.

According to Kivipato, most of the apartments in the seventh floor suffered smoke and water damage. The uppermost floor suffered the worst damage.
